Eating at the edge


       About “eating at the edge”, Horwitz talked about the people’s behavior in regard to when, where and how modern people eat their meal nowadays. The results reflected that people like eating on their own and eating conveniently in their own time. Then horwitz used a simple example of soup to prove his idea. The soup now is the single-serving instead of eating together with a pot or a big bowl (44). However, it should be a regular as people did before. People ate on time and liked eating with their friends, so, they can talk with their friends and share the valuable experience. On the contrary, people’s attitude about eating food changed a lot as the author mentioned in the article. They eat on their own time, "eating when facing computers and televisions. eating at the computer, or eating alone, or on the run, and why it feels increasingly special to eat together with family and friends" (Horwitz 42). There is no talking, no sharing, and even no sentiment with their friends I considered. So the title eating at the edge” is very suitable with this situation.
              For me, I like eating with my family and my friends. When I first came to university of Denver, I felt lonely when I did anything especially eaten in the Centennial dining halls. I was eager for the time when I was eating with my family and my friends, we usually talked about our work and study experiences or interesting things that once happened to us. We also talked, laughed together and enjoyed our time of eating. Now, I make a lot of friends as I did in China, we can also use our leisure time to have a meal to promote emotion. Moreover, eat on time is a healthy habit because the metabolism is organized. So, my standpoint is to discard the point of eating at the edge”.

food leads development


           It was interesting to read the articles “The Cultural Politics of Eating in Shenzhen” and “ ‘Breaking Bread with a Spread’ in a San Francisco County Jail”. The author Mary Ann O’Donnell talks about the development and update of Shenzhen in China, as a Chinese, I am truly affected by the change of food and development by people and government, and also people play an important part in changing the food culture and the development situation. In addition, the author Sandra cate mentioned the food culture and business in a San Francisco County Jail which reflected the wisdom and imagination about people; also, I want to have a try the unique dish which put the pulverizing bread on the noodles.
           In old Shenzhen, people usually catch fish to eat because Shenzhen is in the south of China near the ocean. “Min Yi Shi Wei Tian” the author mentioned in the article direct reflects the main point which made the Shenzhen city developed today. The government supported the fisher and other people in Shenzhen when they met the questions about the fishing; also the business freedom in the full extent permitted by law is the important key to make an area developing. When Shenzhen got more and more developed, many people choose there as their survival place, which have freedom to take business and also can live depend on people’s ability. The reason why Shenzhen is in the lead in China is people in Shenzhen always catch fish, and they are so hard to get only if the fishers have a clever brain, it can also embody in business. To the contrary, people in the north always eat pork and beef; it is very easy to split about the pig and cattle.
          About the food in the San Francisco County Jail, It is amazing that the food the Chinese people made was very famous there. As the author mentioned, people always ate the same food there, the inmates made the unique food in jail because they can eat full by making the different kinds of food by using the remaining and the food in commissary.  What’s more, Spread became a favorite food and a kind of jail’s culture. The type of eating got more and more developed with people’s behaviors; the communication and activities were based on the food they made, such as, they shared food with people and gave their leader in jail. Finally, this behavior became a way to enhance the economics which cannot get across by people.
          Personally, I like the creative ability that the inmates had because it likes a master key to open any tough door.

the significant food

 I found not only the same points but also the different points from the article "Home Run" and "Eating White" after I read them. The stories can also remind of my favorite dish Green pepper fried meat.
         
          The same points I got in the articles are that both Ahn and Nicholson talk about the experience about food which connect to their culture and affect their life. Ahn and Nicholson all use their article to express the ethnic root and culture. Then, I will talk about the different points about the articles. Nicholson mentioned that his mother like white food when she was alive; and his mother also made different kinds of white food to obtain her and her father’s appetite, such as, food with cream, food with white seasonings. What’s more, the reason why Nicholson always like eating white food even he moved to Los Angeles is she respects her mother’s attitude and the religionary belief. In addition, Ahn, a Korean-American, kept the Korean culture with the food when she cooked no matter where she is. In order to inherit the Korean culture, she taught her son progressively by cooking Korean food, the Korean culture, and dinning in Korean restaurants. Moreover, she used only one refrigerator to retain Korean and American food fresh, the ethnic root can also be reminded I considered.
          For me, my favorite dish is Green pepper fried meat which is the order dish I always make not only in the restaurant and home because I cannot forget the feeling that I first ate the dish when I was young which made by my grandma. Now, I can only have it when I have the summer vocation.

In my essay, I emphasized that the picture of the food advertisement is very important to show their products and make more know well by people. When I finished read Ying's essay, I found that the first ad picture in her essay attract my attention as I made in mine. The effective ad pictures can also make the products more popular and  acceptable by people.

Positive effect about food advertisements

    Advertisement became an important means to improve popularity of the products since the first commercial appeared in 1997. We can also see the profits and positive effects after the advertisements about the products which were showed on TV, newspapers, broadcast, and other way such as picture on the remarkable place in cities.
        It is a fact that the food advertisements occupy a large percentage of the advertisements which were known by people. People will not stop paying for the food no matter what the price is because food consumption is the basic outlay of people. Nowadays, people all focus on the quality and value of food, so, the producer should pay attention to how to show more points which are better than the ordinary and similar food if they want to make more profits.
        I choose two food advertisements from different part of China. Both of them can reflect the culture and values on pictures when people see it. The first advertisement is some special local fruits products from Uighur Autonomous Region, such as, aromatous pine, Hami melon, grape, and raisin. Another is the lychee from Hainan province. The analysis is as follows.
         The first advertisement is about a natural fruit which comes from the tableland. The logo on the advertisement is the most famous cartoon character Afanti in China; he stands for the wisdom, optimism and humor about the people in Uighur Autonomous Region. So it is authentic for people to enjoy the natural fruit. Also the title on the top of the advertisement is obvious; they show the unique brand in order to explain that their products are also the particular in China. What’s more, the four circles by different colors display the natural fruit and the price can give people the feeling of credible. In a word, it is a valuable advertisement to show the special local products from Uighur Autonomous Region.

     Green is always regarded as a health and ecological color in China, the background color of the picture gives people a direct visual shock which can attract people’s attention on the advertisement. What’s more, the pulp of the lychee can show people what the fresh and pretty they are. Meanwhile, the beautiful lady on the right of the picture is the imperial concubine Yang of Shu in ancient times. The lychee is the most valuable fruit in north Shu in that time because people who lived in north cannot eat the fresh lychee with the basal vehicle. Even though people try planted the lychee in north, the dry weather broke their dream for eating lychee in north. In order to eat the lychee, Shu lost hundreds soldier and horses to transport the fresh lychee for Yang. That proves the love degree of the lychee by people. At last, the advertisement uses the Yang’s smile to attract people’s attention too.

        The reason why people like the fruits come from Uighur Autonomous Region is because the region has temperate continental monsoon climate, and it was surrounded by mountains. Also the region with abundant light in the daytime and the temperature is very low in the evening, so the fruits come from the region are all sweeter than any others in China. Otherwise, people come from other regions cannot plant the same fruits as sweeter and bigger as them in Uighur Autonomous Region, therefore, people like the valuable fruits which is from there. What’s more, there are several fruit’s festivals in this region; the purpose is to assess the quality and quantity in each year which can affect the market and export of the fruits. The fruits producers who win the game will get their own title and get more profits depend on their outstanding fruits. So, the fruits keep its own advantage so far, and the fruits from this region are always the most popular in China. Personally, the culture in this region makes a positive effect to their fruits.
        As I mentioned before, the lychee was the most valuable fruit in north China several years ago, even though people could spend a lot of money to buy it in north of China, the quality of lychee could not be retained well because of the transport which was not developed in that time. The reason why people cannot plant lychee in north is because lychee almost grow in tropic or semitropics places. In recent years, people studied out a new variety about lychee which can plant in north China even in some places with a little dry weather. Now, people in north China can eat fresh lychee depend on the new technology which change the value about lychee. When people eating lychee in north depend on the new technology, they always recall the story about Yang because the culture of lychee still affect the developing of fruit.
        At last, we can study not only the desire and rhetorical function but also the cultures and values from the advertisements.

The amazing Cantonese Cuisine


The amazing dinner I had was in a Chinese restaurant in Orlando FL with my friends during the spring break. We all like the Disney world, Universal Studios and the Island Of Adventure there, so my three friends and I made the plan to play in Orlando. Personally, I like play the roller coaster in the parks we went to, and the best one is the Incredible Hulk Coaster I considered, because it has more new rolling-over and turning. We found a Chinese restaurant near downtown on the first day because that day is my birthday, all my friends was more excited than me because we have a friends’ rule which says that someone will pay the bill when he/she is on birthday. We choose an authentic Cantonese Cuisine restaurant which has some famous dishes we heard in China, such as, egg drop soup, fired wonton, homemade dim sum dumplings, live Maine lobster, steamed spareribs, steamed barbecued pork buns, steamed rice flour rolls with barbecue beef, and so on. I liked the soup in this restaurant because people in Guangdong are good at making Clay Pot Soup, and the stuffs in the soup are full of nutrition. I expect for the opportunities to enjoy the Cantonese Cuisine.

Respond for Class Distinctions in Potato Chip Advertising


In this article, the authors indicated that the language of the potato chips can also reflect the different level between people who choose different chips depend on the price per ounce or the quality and taste; People in upper-class will focus on the second point which is expensive, better and have more advantages for people to eat, otherwise, people in lower-class is almost care about the first point which is cheaper than others. Also, the advertising language is truly display that the natural authenticity which was partial by the people in upper-class who like natural, healthy, and not artificial or processed (53) and the traditional authenticity which was partial by people in lower-class who enjoy traditional, American, rooted in family recipes and family traditions, and located in the American landscape (53).

I found that the health part in this article is most interesting. I can easily understand the result which told us the expensive and inexpensive chips are essentially the same in several parts, such as, there are many grams trans fat in the two different chips, they are not objectively a healthy food, they all have the sodium, and the fat in chips cannot be ignored. People all know that the bad factors in potato chips will be more or less affect their health I considered, so, the advertising language of the potato chips divide people into upper or lower class; people who is in upper class pursue naturalness/ingredients in expensive chips, who in lower class like historicity/locality in inexpensive chips.

short essay 1

                                   Healthy Eating
In China, there are more than eight kinds of food which were named by the name of province or the location in China, such as Shandong cuisine, Chongqing cuisine, Northeastern cuisine, Beijing cuisine, Cantonese cuisine, Hunan cuisine, Sichuan cuisine, Northwestern cuisine and so on. The Chongqing Style Boiled Blood Curd is my only favorite food in Chongqing cuisine; we call it Maoxuewang which is very spicy and healthy food in China. The picture as follows,                                   

Personally, I always like the spicy food, and there are several kinds of pepper from different countries in my refrigerator. When I first saw the Maoxuewang in Chongqing province, the appearance attracted my attention and the pepper in it also made me exciting. Although it is too spicy for people who cannot eat spicy food, people usually order it in restaurants.
When I was first come to Chongqing province, my friends took me to the snack street to taste their food; the deep impression is the food in there is all spicy. At the beginning in Chongqing, I could not adapt to the wet weather, and my joints were painful. I told my friends my situation when we met in a luxury hotel at night, my friends just smiled and told me the food in the hotel could remit my pain. It was my first time to saw the brighter and fresh food, when the Maoxuewang was served. You can see the red curd and pepper in the dish first, and then the fragrance also makes you become more appetitive. There are several stuffs in it, the major ingredient is duck blood, soybean sprouts, and the minor ingredient is eel, ham, citron, agaric and lettuce. In the second day after we ate together, I felt good and the pain disappeared. My friends told me people also got arthritis because of the wet weather in Chongqing, after finding the piquancy can dispel the dampness in people’s body, people in the area always ate the spicy food to kept healthy. Now it is become a culture there and the Chongqing food become more and more popular in China.
After the vacation in Chongqing, I searched the origin of Maoxuewang. There was a town near west Shaping dam, it was the most important place for people to trade around the Jialing River. It was so prosperous because most ship was berthed in there. Before 1970, there was a fat woman open a stall to sell the soup, such as pork soup, bone soup with lung lobe, intestines, and several kinds of spice in it. It was occasionally that the woman put the duck blood in the soup and it became more delicious, so it was called Maoxuewang. As time went on, people revised it to more bright and fresh than before.
The stuffs in Maoxuewang are all have their value. First, the soybean sprouts contains vitamin, people eat it can defend the deficiency of vitamin B2, the vitamin E in soybean sprouts can protect the skin and blood capillary, it also can defend the hypertension. What’s more, the citron can provide the microelement that people needed, and some elements can help people defer senility. Moreover, the agaric is a very health food which is warm in nature, nourishing liver and spleen, enriching the blood, fight against senium and agerasia. It contains vitamin K which is fighting against thrombosis and coronary heart disease, the most important function is that the pectin in agaric can remove the dust and impurity, the ability of cleaning is very famous in food. At last, the lettuce contains potassium which can release the pressure of atrium, and it has several benefits for the people who got hypertension and heart disease. Also, it contains iodine which helps people keep regular metabolism, growing and developing.
Generally speaking, there are five reasons why people in Chongqing like spicy food. First, the environment and weather make people change their custom about food. Second, the wet weather also give rise to people to get the arthritis, so people eat the spicy food in order to keep heath. Third, people can always have the appetite if they ate the spicy food. What’s more, the piquancy also has the function about hairdressing and it has positive effect for the breasts. Moreover, the spicy food has the ability to prevent cancer.
     In autumn quarter last year, I found a restaurant named China Jade which has the Maoxuewang. It is a little more different from Maoxuewang Chongqing, and the China Jade made a little reform about it. I can also recall the first feeling and the experience in Chongqing when I eat the Maoxuewang.
